BOOK EXCERPT:

The Player Slayer is an outrageous and hilarious guide on how to defeat, reject and otherwise deflect the players in your life. It’s a real world revision of The Rules, an urban answer to He’s Just Not That Into You. With steel-sharp wit and cutting insight, “Ms. T” breaks down both the player and the game. Most importantly, she shows you how to turn yourself from a “mark”—alone, outraged and disappointed—to a “slayer” strong enough to withstand even the best game. Ms. T blows away the whole “don’t hate the player, hate the game” smokescreen to reveal what makes a player a player, what makes his game work, and why women get beaten up in the game. This down-and-dirty guide will leave you empowered with the knowledge to outwit, outlast, and outplay even the player’s player.

"The essays take on several points of game and film intersection, looking at story lines, aesthetics, mechanics, and production. The book is about adaptation (video game to film, film to video game) but it is even more about narrative, drawing attention to the ways, workings and possibilities of telling a story in the present moment"--

BOOK EXCERPT:

Gangs are responsible for over 80 percent of the crime in the United States. The cost of gang violence is staggering. In many communities, no one feels safe walking down his or her own streets—and that, Dan Googen feels, is simply too high a cost to pay. Dan was a soldier, trained in combat overseas. When he returns home to see that his own neighborhood is held captive by a violent invasion force of its own, he springs into action. He goes undercover and begins to live the gangland life. What he doesn’t count on is how his life will be affected by the friendships he forms with the members of the gangs. His new secret life is in bitter conflict with his ideals and goals. Can he do what needs to be done—or will these new friendships test his resolve? While living undercover, Dan befriends Tiny, one of the gang members. With Dan’s help, Tiny is able to accomplish the unthinkable: he breaks free from the gangs and enrolls in college. There, he becomes a breakout basketball star; his life is now on an unstoppably positive path. When Tiny’s dreams of playing pro ball finally come true, he makes good on his promise to help the kids he left behind in the hood. He comes home, a local hero determined to do anything he can to help. Tiny receives the answer to his prayers ... but not the one he expected.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Post-Cinematic Affect is about what it feels like to live in the affluent West in the early 21st century. Specifically, it explores the structure of feeling that is emerging today in tandem with new digital technologies, together with economic globalization and the financialization of more and more human activities. The 20th century was the age of film and television; these dominant media shaped and reflected our cultural sensibilities. In the 21st century, new digital media help to shape and reflect new forms of sensibility. Movies (moving image and sound works) continue to be made, but they have adopted new formal strategies, they are viewed under massively changed conditions, and they address their spectators in different ways than was the case in the 20th century. The book traces these changes, focusing on four recent moving-image works: Nick Hooker's music video for Grace Jones' song Corporate Cannibal; Olivier Assayas' movie Boarding Gate, starring Asia Argento; Richard Kelly's movie Southland Tales, featuring Justin Timberlake, Dwayne Johnson, and other pop culture celebrities; and Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's Gamer.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Since the Doom series, First Person Shooter (FPS) videogames have ricocheted through the gaming community, often reaching outside that community to the wider public. While critics primarily lampoon FPSs for their aggressiveness and on-screen violence, gamers see something else. Halo is one of the greatest, most successful FPSs ever to grace the world of gaming. Although Halo is a FPS, it has a science-fiction storyline that draws from previous award-winning science fiction literature. It employs a game mechanic that limits the amount of weapons a player can carry to two, and a multiplayer element that has spawned websites like Red vs. Blue and games within the game created by players themselves. Halo’s unique and extraordinary features raise serious questions. Are campers really doing anything wrong? Does Halo’s music match the experience of the gamer? Would Plato have used Halo to train citizens to live an ethical life? What sort of Artificial Intelligence exists in Halo and how is it used? Can the player’s experience of war tell us anything about actual war? Is there meaning to Master Chief’s rough existence? How does it affect the player’s ego if she identifies too strongly with an aggressive character like Master Chief? Is Halo really science fiction? Can Halo be used for enlightenment-oriented thinking in the Buddhist sense? Does Halo's weapon limitation actually contribute to the depth of the gameplay? When we willingly play Halo only to die again and again, are we engaging in some sort of self-injurious behavior? What is expansive gameplay and how can it be informed by the philosophy of Michel Foucault? In what way does Halo’s post-apocalyptic paradigm force gamers to see themselves as agents of divine deliverance? What can Red vs. Blue teach us about personal identity? These questions are tackled by writers who are both Halo cognoscenti and active philosophers, with a foreword by renowned Halo fiction author Fred Van Lente and an afterword by leading games scholar and artist Roger Ngim.

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book examines a source of much mystery and consternation to your average role-player, The Female Gamer and the female of the species in general. The only culture present here should be examined under a slide and given a long Latin name before being exterminated with penicillin. None of this should be taken as offensive, though it probably will be. If you cannot see that we are also taking the Mickey out of male gamers as much, if not more, than gamers of the female persuasion then you need a humour transplant and a kick up your pert, well rounded, tightly chain mail clad arse. Please accept that most gamers do not have issues with women - they have a subscription, a complete collection from issue one and fancy binders to keep them in. Female gamers are a completely unknown quantity to the vast and overwhelming majority of gamers, though matters have been ever so slowly changing in that regard. As these creatures become more populous in the gaming fraternity it behooves the male gamer to at least make an attempt understand this creature and to make preparations for their increasing invasion. It would not do to be caught unawares by any new creature or trap and every adventurer's motto should be 'Be prepared', rather than 'Experience points! Chaaaaaarge!'
