BOOK EXCERPT:

Helen Eustis’s The Horizontal Man (1946) won an Edgar Award for best first novel and continues to fascinate as a singular mixture of detection, satire, and psychological portraiture. A poet on the faculty of an Ivy League school is found murdered, setting off ripple effects of anxiety, suspicion, and panic in the hot house atmosphere of an English department rife with talk of Freud and Kafka. This classic novel is one of eight works included in The Library of America's two-volume edition Women Crime Writers: Eight Suspense Novels of the 1940s & 50s, edited by Sarah Weinman.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Library of America and editor Sarah Weinman redefine the classic era of American crime fiction with a landmark collection of four brilliant novels by the female pioneers of the genre, the women who paved the way for Gillian Flynn, Tana French, and Lisa Scottoline. Though women crime and suspense writers dominate today’s bestseller lists, the extraordinary work of the mid-century pioneers of the genre is largely unknown. Turning in many cases from the mean streets of the hardboiled school to explore the anxieties and terrors lurking in everyday life, these groundbreaking novelists found the roots of fear and violence in a quiet suburban neighborhood, on a college campus, or in a comfortable midtown hotel. Their work, influential in its day and still vibrant and extraordinarily riveting today, is long overdue for rediscovery. This volume, the first of a two-volume collector’s set, gathers four classic works that together reveal the vital and unacknowledged lineage to today’s leading crime writers. From the 1940s here are Vera Caspary’s famous career girl mystery Laura, Helen Eustis’s intricate academic thriller The Horizontal Man, Dorothy B. Hughes’s In a Lonely Place, the terrifyingly intimate portrait of a serial killer, and Elizabeth Sanxay Holding’s The Blank Wall, in which a wife in wartime is forced to take extreme measures when her family is threatened. From the Hardcover edition.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Kerry Sanderson's life is falling apart. He's crushing himself to fit into the boxes others have put him in: dutiful son, good boyfriend, real man. But even the small rebellions he's fought for himself-moving into a sketchy part of town and becoming an exotic dancer-aren't giving him the freedom he needs. Ewyn Garrity, a security guard at the gay club where Kerry dances, has found himself in protecting others. Everyone thinks he's straight, but Ewyn doesn't fit into simple boxes, either. When he meets Kerry, he makes a not completely innocent offer of company after work. Ewyn and Kerry hit it off, each finding something he desperately needs in the other. But when Kerry is forced to confront the pain and self-doubt that keep him crushed in his boxes, he's afraid that no one, not even Ewyn, will be able to love who he is when he finally, truly becomes Kerry. BOOK EXCERPT:

Readers will feel they know someone just like the characters in this timely novel on social status and social media. Steen Sand, CEO of Stensure Networks, is the head honcho at an IT firm that's developed an Internet service to monitor, compute, and publish people's social status. His chief operating officer, Irene Lund, serves as his muse. He needs her to be part of his world, or he can't achieve anything of significance. But does she feel the same? Chief financial officer, Michael Jensen, is a hard-core pessimist who has learned the hard way not to speak up against the status quo, in spite of his natural inclination to do so. Jensen's a numbers guy. He relates to spreadsheets better than he does to people. Will this cost him in the end? Louise Hald, chief marketing officer, joined Stensure's management team after leaving her post as an assistant professor at a business school. She's beginning to wonder if she'll ever move past the "assistant" part in the eyes of her coworkers. What can she do to ensure she gets ahead? And then there's Sophie Bech. She's made the long trip back to Denmark from South Africa for her own private reasons, and everything looks different to her now. She wonders what her return will hold for her. Was it a mistake? Will her fresh set of eyes-and values-help or hinder the team? Reductionism-understanding complex things by reducing them to fundamental parts and interactions-comes up against social status, so subtle, intricate, and sought-after, in this intriguing modern-day novel. Will these characters-and their supporting players-make the changes they need to survive in today's world? Or will they succumb to the allure of using easy but underhanded methods to get ahead?

BOOK EXCERPT:

When the girl of his dreams appears on Christopher's doorstep, it seems to be the answer to a prayer; but it is really the beginning of a nightmare. She is in trouble. No doubt. It wouldn't be the first time, but this is something different, something she hasn't been able to smile or talk her way out of, something ugly, something likely to follow. There is a predator out there and she is the prey. When she disappears, Christopher must go looking for her. The search takes him into the catacombs beneath the Capitol where he finds remnants of Washington's most notorious flesh-peddlers and must face his greatest fears, battling the massive man who has taken his love and will do anything to get back what she has taken from him. Beneath this storyline is another level of meaning, both philosophical and scientific. In nature most creatures are phototactic, meaning they move toward or away from the light. The extremes are the moth and the cockroach. One is drawn to the light. The other hides from the light and seeks the deepest part of the night. The structure of this novel is based on the developmental stages of the moth and the comparison of men to moths. Man's distinction, of course, is that we can choose. The second structural element is provided by Virgil's Aeneid. These words are carved on an arch at the entrance to the catacombs beneath the Capitol. Facilis descensus Averno - The way down to Hell is easy. While it is not reflected there, the passage continues: Hoc opus, hic labor est. - The path out of Hell is hard.
