BOOK EXCERPT:

Thoroughly revised and updated, this third edition offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the social psychology of aggression, covering all the relevant major theories, individual differences, situational factors, and applied contexts. Understanding the causes, forms, and consequences of aggression and violence is critical for dealing with these harmful forms of social behavior. Addressing a range of sub-topics, the first section deals with the definition and measurement of aggression, presents major theories, examines the development of aggression and discusses individual and gender differences in aggressive behaviour. It covers the role of situational factors in eliciting aggression and the impact of exposure to violence in the media. The second section examines specific forms and manifestations of aggression, including chapters on aggression in everyday contexts and in the family, sexual aggression, intergroup aggression, and terrorism. The new edition also includes additional coverage of gender differences, gun violence, and terrorism, to reflect the latest research developments in the field. Also featuring sections discussing strategies for reducing and preventing aggression, this is essential reading for students and researchers in psychology and related disciplines, as well as practitioners such as policy makers.

A new paradigm in Social Psychology. All disease is obstruction, all recovery elimination, all success attraction. A NEW SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY: How People Keep Us Down--both in everyday relationships and sick family systems, we see the dangerous influence of liberalism on our thinking and the family. A complete theory with a formula: all disease is obstruction, all recovery is elimination, then all success is attraction. After reading Dr. Kellock's works you're your own social engineer who can diagnose any psych problem.Ph.D. Political Psychology (UCI) Postdoctoral: UCI School of Medicine, Dept. of Psychiatry, NIMH/NIAAA Grants to develop a theory of System Pathology. Taught Abnormal Psychology and Pathological Systems Theory at Cal. State Universities.COMMENTS AND REVIEWSA new theory in social psychology: the tyranny of groups vs. the individual and an extremely unusual and unique presentation. Thrilling actually: Collective insanity, the contagion of lunacy. What does it take to be a champion standing out in a sea of sharks? That is the essence of the writings of Karen Kellock. Miguel Tellez, Boca Raton FLDisparate but interesting quips come together later in your mind: little releasors of old anchors from the past or the gutter. Robert Silverstein, Pahoa HawaiiThe 112 book set by Karen Kellock Ph.D. is hard science presented in quip format. She is a maestro with words, all about the herds. The writing is subtle, witty, clever and powerful in machine-gun format. Koestler [1962] has noted the blending of art and science marks all rare discoveries. Her use of verse opens up new avenues of thought while forcing the new view. This makes the writing pithier with more depth and amplitude as it congers up higher worlds than the petty mundane greedy one around us. This the author does miraculously--never vacuously. --Mathew Egonsilini, Psychiatrist, Las VegasLike getting your brain washed out with drano. James E. Ashton .

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume describes classic and contemporary theory and research in social psychology that sheds light on how people think about health and illness, as well as their willingness to engage in health-relevant behaviors. The Editors have selected papers that serve to illustrate the reciprocal relation between advances in theory and advances in practice. The first two sections of the volume examine people's mental representations of health and health practices, and how these personal construals and implicit theories are linked to behavior. People can react to new health information in different ways - with acceptance, defensiveness, or downright ignorance. Research that can help us to understand these varied reactions is examined in Section 3. The following sections consider how classic social psychological theories and perspectives can be used to understand behavior relevant to health and illness. These include social influence, social comparison, pluralistic ignorance, social support, cognitive dissonance, message framing, and attribution theory. Finally, several articles consider links between personality characteristics and health, such as those between hostility and heart disease, and confiding traumatic experiences and immune function. The volume also contains a introductory chapter by the editors which provides a discussion of why social and personality psychologists should be interested in health and illness. Together with overviews for each section, discussion questions, and suggestions for further reading, the volume is an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on health psychology. The volume is also appropriate for courses in related disciplines such as public health, nursing, health education, health communication, and other allied health sciences.

European Review of Social Psychology Volume 3 Edited by Wolfgang Stroebe, University of Tubingen, West Germany and Miles Hewstone, University of Bristol, UK The European Review of Social Psychology is an annual series that reflects the dynamism of social psychology in Europe and the attention now paid to European ideas and research. Although open to authors from all nations, one of its major purposes is to further the international exchange of ideas by providing an outlet for substantial accounts of theoretical and empirical work that has not been previously published in English. With the help of an editorial board consisting of senior scholars from various European countries and the USA, the editors will invite outstanding researchers to contribute to these volumes. The emphasis of these contributions will be on critical assessment of major areas of research and of substantial individual programmes of research as well as on topics and initiatives of contemporary interest and originality. The authors of this third volume are drawn from Europe, the United States and Australia. They represent the international scope and quality which the editors intend should become the hallmarks of this series.
