eBook Download BOOK EXCERPT:Real-Life Scenarios: A Case Study Perspective on Health Communication provides thirty-one cases co-written by leading scholars that reflect the most current and pressing research and practice in the field. The brevity and variety of cases offer a diverse range of perspectives withoutmonopolizing student reading time. Rather than providing expert analysis, each case is followed by key terms and questions that challenge students to interrogate communication patterns, stimulating critical thinking and introspection.Created by two leaders in the field, Athena du Pre is author of the leading health communication text Communicating About Health and Eileen Berlin Ray is an award-winning health communication scholar with many books to her credit. This book can be used on its own, as a supplement to any text, or asan accompaniment to du Pre's Communicating About Health.

eBook Download BOOK EXCERPT:This work proposes a complete sensor-independent visual system that provides robust target motion detection. First, the way sensors obtain images, in terms of resolution distribution and pixel neighbourhood, is studied. This allows a spatial analysis of motion to be carried out. Then, a novel background maintenance approach for robust target motion detection is implemented. Two different situations are considered: a fixed camera observing a constant background where objects are moving; and a still camera observing objects in movement within a dynamic background. This distinction lies on developing a surveillance mechanism without the constraint of observing a scene free of foreground elements for several seconds when a reliable initial background model is obtained, as that situation cannot be guaranteed when a robotic system works in an unknown environment. Other problems are also addressed to successfully deal with changes in illumination, and the distinction between foreground and background elements.

eBook Download BOOK EXCERPT:'Bennett provides a well organized, very readable and interesting discussion of a number of significant everyday cultural forms and I am confident student readers will find the book very valuable' - Barry Smart, University of Portsmouth Culture and Everyday Life provides students with a comprehensive overview of theoretical models, issues and examples of contemporary cultural practice. Bennett begins by summarising and situating - in everyday settings - the key theoretical models applied in the study of existing cultural practices. This entails a systematic study of how academic thinking about mass culture has changed, from critical accounts of early mass cultural theorists to radical postmodernist critiques of mass cultural accounts and to 'the cultural turn', which explored how various social identities are culturally constructed. Following this are themed chapters that cover a particular aspect of late modern culture, such as media, music, fashion, tourism and counter-cultural ideologies and movements. In each case a comprehensive literature review is provided and its theoretical and empirical relevance to our understanding of the relationship between culture and everyday life in contemporary society is explained. Lucid, meticulous and illustrated with a host of examples, this is a superb text for teaching and research in the Sociology of Culture and Cultural Studies.
