BOOK EXCERPT:

A classic account of courage, integrity, and most of all, belonging In 1977, Natan Sharansky, a leading activist in the democratic dissident movement in the Soviet Union and the movement for free Jewish emigration, was arrested by the KGB. He spent nine years as a political prisoner, convicted of treason against the state. Every day, Sharansky fought for individual freedom in the face of overt tyranny, a struggle that would come to define the rest of his life. Never Alone reveals how Sharansky's years in prison, many spent in harsh solitary confinement, prepared him for a very public life after his release. As an Israeli politician and the head of the Jewish Agency, Sharansky brought extraordinary moral clarity and uncompromising, often uncomfortable, honesty. His storyis suffused with reflections from his time as a political prisoner, from his seat at the table as history unfolded in Israel and the Middle East, and from his passionate efforts to unite the Jewish people. Written with frankness, affection, and humor, the book offers us profound insights from a man who embraced the essential human struggle: to find his own voice, his own faith, and the people to whom he could belong.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Chris didn't care about anyone or anything, except maybe his mom, her desire to see him graduate from high school, and his bike. Will he make it to the mission trip in Brazil? His first life changing decision comes just in time to hold him and keep him from falling off the deep end alone. Jan Sullivan is a "retired" youth pastor having served in youth ministry for thirteen years. She lives in Lexington, Kentucky with her dog Abby and spends her time loving teenagers and consuming Christian fiction. Jan's first book "Forever Family" was published in July 2008. BOOK EXCERPT:

I Was Never Alone or Oporniki presents an original ethnographic stage play, based on fieldwork conducted in Russia with adults with disabilities. The core of the work is the script of the play itself, which is accompanied by a description of the script development process, from the research in the field to rehearsals for public performances. In a supporting essay, the author argues that both ethnography and theatre can be understood as designs for being together in unusual ways, and that both practices can be deepened by recognizing the vibrant social impact of interdependency animated by vulnerability, as identified by disability theorists and activists.

BOOK EXCERPT:

For many years, I dreamed of writing a book. During that time, it was going to be this fairy-tale quality about me and some relatives with an unrealistic, happy ending where everybody was magically transformedpoofinto perfect people with no more problems. I repeata fairy tale. Some of the names in this story are fictional. This story is meant to encourage the readers. You are never alone. God is only a prayer away. He is standing by. He is knocking and waiting if you want to let him in. He wants a relationship with you, but he wont force it. The romantic in me still loves a fairy tale with a happy ending, but I am older and wiser and knows thats not always how life goes. I have learned that we are all imperfect, flawed human beings and that life deals us each different blows. God allows sad things to happen to everyone. The amount of money we have does not exclude us from painful things. We all suffer hurt; loss of a child, a spouse, or parents; divorce; fatal illnesses; and other problems that incur during our lifetime. These are the lessons of life. This is the story of the life of a person I choose to call Cullodena Adaira. These are her experiences, growth, and maturity.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Elizabeth Haynes’ new psychological thriller is a brilliantly suspenseful and shocking story in which nothing is at it seems, but everything is at stake. Sarah Carpenter lives in an isolated farmhouse in North Yorkshire and for the first time, after the death of her husband some years ago and her children, Louis and Kitty, leaving for university, she’s living alone. But she doesn’t consider herself lonely. She has two dogs, a wide network of friends and the support of her best friend, Sophie. When an old acquaintance, Aiden Beck, needs somewhere to stay for a while, Sarah’s cottage seems ideal; and renewing her relationship with Aiden gives her a reason to smile again. It’s supposed to be temporary, but not everyone is comfortable with the arrangement: her children are wary of his motives, and Will Brewer, an old friend of her son’s, seems to have taken it upon himself to check up on Sarah at every opportunity. Even Sophie has grown remote and distant. After Sophie disappears, it’s clear she hasn’t been entirely honest with anyone, including Will, who seems more concerned for Sarah’s safety than anyone else. As the weather closes in, events take a dramatic turn and Kitty too goes missing. Suddenly Sarah finds herself in terrible danger, unsure of who she can still trust. But she isn’t facing this alone; she has Aiden, and Aiden offers the protection that Sarah needs. Doesn’t he?

BOOK EXCERPT:

One of the things I learned on this thousand-mile walk is I am only vulnerable when I hide and, I hide when I feel threatened, not up to the challenge, or I am ashamed about something. Also, I realized as humans, most of us are always host to at least one if not all three conditions that invest heavily in our sense of guilt, shame and fear. These conditions exist greatly because of the ill will that we have projected and invested in the image of our own creation, not understanding the power we put into such an investment, nor do many of us have the spiritual understanding of the spoken and unspoken word, and its internal and external power over our thought processes as well as our behavior. On the other hand, I believe with positivism one can disinvest in all ones negativity. One cannot do harm to ones neighbor without doing harm to ones own character, self-esteem, emotional and mental stability; ones own sense of self is diminished. Let us step out of fear and free the heart; free the heart and step into the power of ones eternal-self and you are, once again, walking in humanity, in spirit, reflecting the loving image of Spirit, not the confusion we have placed upon such a concept.
