love without borders

EXCERPT:

From the founder of This Gathered Nest YouTube channel, an uplifting story of Angela Braniff's unusual path to becoming the mother to seven children through various methods of adoption and biological approaches, encouraging women and mothers to embrace the unique purpose that God has put in their lives. Angela’s love for life and her family radiates through everything she does. The Braniff household includes their two biological daughters, Kennedy, 12, and Shelby 10; Rosie, 7, who was adopted from China with Down syndrome; Noah, 7, adopted from Congo; Jonah 5, adopted domestically; and finally, Ivy and Amelia, their one year old twins who were adopted as embryos, and implanted in Angela, who gave birth to them. In fact, after the book was finished, they joyfully welcomed a new baby into their home, Benjamin, through adoption, making them now a family of ten! Love Without Borders shares Angela's relatable, humorous, and honest view of motherhood. Angela chronicles her journey to discover God’s purpose for her life. For years she walked the safe, expected path, until one day she could feel God calling her to boldly step out and follow him into new places, which led her to raise a large, non-traditional family that looked different than she ever imagined. It was a winding path to motherhood, complete with heartbreak from failed adoptions, challenging pregnancies, and secondary infertility, but through it all Angela found the unique adventure God had for her. She has shared her family’s stories on her popular YouTube channel, This Gathered Nest, and now invites us in to go deeper and listen to where God might be calling us to go and who we’ve been tasked with loving, no matter how unusual (or just plain crazy) it may sound! The beauty of God’s plan is he uses imperfect people to bring about perfectly beautiful stories.

Nineteen-year old Juan Morales is a lover but not a fighter. Therefore, when the drunken father of the girl he impregnates tries to gun him down on the footsteps of a tiny mountain chapel as he is about to marry another, the bride-to-be receives the misdirected bullets and Juan becomes a fugitive of love. From his hamlet in the pine forests of the Oaxacan Sierra Madre in Southern Mexico, he makes the arduous and dangerous escape to "El Norte ." He settles in the central California city of Bakersfield, where he instinctively continues his reputation as a "Don Juan." Things go well until he decides to move in with a shapely blond waitress of Oklahoma origins to "Improve his English." Blending of the two cultures is sometimes humorous and sometimes not; he likes tacos and she prefers hot dogs. Eventually, the relationship does not go well. Her fits of jealousy, some well founded, often take the couple into the abyss of depression and despair. Ultimately he precipitates the break-up by visiting the salacious and experienced Chonita - truly a fornicator's therapist. Escaping another shooting, he returns to his Oaxacan paradise where he encounters an unexpected supernatural experience.

EXCERPT:

Let us begin with the notion that there is nothing like a blueprint for a successful dating relationship or marriage. No one can teach anyone how to enter into and maintain a perfect marriage or relationship or avoid the common mistakes people make that wreck marriages and relationships. Not even a counselor, psychologist, or minister or anyone else can provide a plan that can guarantee a successful romance, marriage, love affair, or a dating relationship. There are just too many variables involved that make such a prediction impractical, if not impossible. Relationships, marriages, and love affairs work as a result of the time, effort, and energy put into it by those involved. For some, everything works out just fine and everybody is happy, but sometimes, the opposite happens and the question becomes: why do some succeed, while others fail? It gets even more complicated when one of the two people involved is from another race, country, or culture.

The Braniff household includes their two biological daughters, Kennedy, 12, and Shelby 10; Rosie, 7, who was adopted from China with special needs; Noah, 7, adopted from Congo; Jonah 5, adopted domestically; and finally, Ivy and Amelia, their one year old twins who were adopted as embryos, and implanted in Angela, who gave birth to them. With both humor and honesty, Angela chronicles her journey to discover God's purpose for her and how she welcomed it--even though it meant raising a large, non-traditional family that looked different than she ever imagined. She talks about diverse aspects of her kids' lives, from the challenging adoption process, to secondary infertility, and homeschooling. And most important, she reflects on coming to terms with her own sense of identity and worth, on learning to accept there is no "perfect" way to be a woman, wife, and mother, and on embracing and sharing God's message that love has no borders. EXCERPT:

Cameron Powers, musician and linguist, begins cross-cultural explorations early in life by mountaineering in the Peruvian Andes and running his "terrible tours" in Mexico and Peru. "Whatever you do, don't go there!" is the clue needed to choose an interesting destination. Ultimately Cameron's calm but adventurous spirit led him to enter Baghdad while the city was still in flames following the 2003 bombing so that he might sing Iraqi love songs on the streets to demonstrate a very different methodology for cross-cultural relations. His current partner, Kristina Sophia, accompanied him. Cameron's path carried him into Greece where he took up residence with his Greek girlfriend and dove into learning Greek language and music. Cameron had already acquired musical skills and language-learning skills from years of training in linguistics. HIs quest for fluency in both Spanish and the Inca language, Quechua, had carried him through many academic programs. Returning to Colorado from Greece, he married his Greek girlfriend. They raised two children and formed bands which performed in local Greek, Persian and Arabic restaurants. Playing for belly dancers led Cameron into beginning the study of Egyptian music and Arabic language. Cameron had been accompanied on two of his early trips to a remote Quechua village in Peru by his then girlfriend Lisa whose journal entries add feminine perspectives to the story. Cameron has featured the roles played by Lisa, Leda and Kristina since his preference was not so much to travel alone but rather to travel with a woman and enter into the structures of family life in not only Peru and Greece, but ultimately in Egypt, Jordan and Syria. So many travel adventures feature lone males traveling into remote and sometimes dangerous areas of the world with a journalist's or even a soldier's attitude. Cameron's approach is very different. Always aspiring to learn languages and local love songs and finding the entry portals into the hearts of other cultures through endless musical performances, Cameron has seen the world from a close up and tender point of view. Cameron came to believe that love without reservations or borders could be the magical ingredient for which so many travelers have sought without knowing how easily this can actually be achieved. Love Without Borders is an adventure tale of endless affairs of love, sometimes sexual but more often attuned to whatever local family values prevail.

EXCERPT:

To what degree does culture facilitate or distort the Christian faith, the gospel of Jesus, and the life of the church? In America, the distortion is enormous. Gospel Without Borders carefully examines the complex intersection of culture and faith in America, providing insights that allow for better understanding and a more genuine experience of biblical and historic Christianity. Gospel Without Borders analyzes the formative and interactive roles that human nature and cultural history play in contemporary expressions of Christianity in America. It outlines their profound but little appreciated influence upon the shape and scope of Christian faith within society-at-large, the church, and the lives of individuals. The study illuminates the dimensions of a largely unheralded gospel message characterized by unimpeded faith that fully accords with the kingdom Jesus stridently proclaimed. It outlines the dimensions of faith freed from the disappointing forms of "culturalized" Christianity that always prove insufficient on a personal level and woefully inadequate to the demands of contemporary life within our globalizing world. Today's world can only be effectively impacted through a "gospel without borders"--a compelling gospel most Americans have yet to hear, and too many Christians--of every cultural and denominational background--have yet to fully embrace.
