BOOK EXCERPT:

It was a very silent room in which the three men sat, furnished with the extreme common sense of the period. It had neither window nor door; for it was now sixty years since the world, recognising that space is not confined to the surface of the globe, had begun to burrow in earnest. Old Mr. Templeton’s house stood some forty feet below the level of the Thames embankment, in what was considered a somewhat commodious position, for he had only a hundred yards to walk before he reached the station of the Second Central Motor-circle, and a quarter of a mile to the volor-station at Blackfriars. He was over ninety years old, however, and seldom left his house now. The room itself was lined throughout with the delicate green jade-enamel prescribed by the Board of Health, and was suffused with the artificial sunlight discovered by the great Reuter forty years before; it had the colour-tone of a spring wood, and was warmed and ventilated through the classical frieze grating to the exact temperature of 18 degrees Centigrade. Mr. Templeton was a plain man, content to live as his father had lived before him. Aeterna Press

294 pages. Preface 4Prologue 5Book I17The Advent Book II94The Encounters Book III216The Victory PREFACEI am perfectly aware that this is a terribly sensational book, and open to innumerable criticisms on that account, as well as on many others. But I did not know how else to express the principles I desired (and which I passionately believe to be true) except by producing their lines to a sensational point. I have tried, however, not to scream unduly loud, and to retain, so far as possible, reverence and consideration for the opinions of other people. Whether I have succeeded in that attempt is quite another matter.Robert Hugh Benson.CAMBRIDGE 1907

The novel begins with a prologue set in early 21st century London in which the history of the last century is described. A global rise of Marxism has divided the world up into three power-blocs; a European Confederation of Marxist one-party states, an Eastern Empire comprised of the former Asian and Oceanic countries, and an American Republic comprised of North, South, and Central America. Culture and politics is now dominated by a mix of Marxism, atheism, and secular humanism.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize "A magisterial work...You can't help thinking about the economic crisis we're living through now." --The New York Times Book Review It is commonly believed that the Great Depression that began in 1929 resulted from a confluence of events beyond any one person's or government's control. In fact, as Liaquat Ahamed reveals, it was the decisions made by a small number of central bankers that were the primary cause of that economic meltdown, the effects of which set the stage for World War II and reverberated for decades. As yet another period of economic turmoil makes headlines today, Lords of Finance is a potent reminder of the enormous impact that the decisions of central bankers can have, their fallibility, and the terrible human consequences that can result when they are wrong.

Robert H. Benson: Three Dystopian & Supernatural Novels. (Lord Of The World, The Dawn Of All & A Mirror Of Shalott)In this volume we present three novels by English writer Robert Hugh Benson, an Anglican and then Catholic Priest turned writer. He was lauded in his own day as one of the leading figures in English literature, having written the notable book Lord of the World, which centers upon the reign of the Anti-Christ and the End of the World. It has been called prophetic, among others, by Pope Benedict XVI and most recently, Pope Francis, which has rendered the work extremely popular recently. He also wrote a second book to that series, The Dawn of All, in a more positive tone. Lord of the World We included in this volume a rather interesting and rare novel, A MIRROR OF SHALOTT, which narrates the supernatural encounters of a group of priests who have all faced their quota of ghost and spirits throughout their careers.

This book, the first to compare theories of empire as they emerged in, and helped to define, the great colonial powers-Spain, Britain, and France-describes the different ways and arguments these countries used to legitimate the seizure and subjugation of aboriginal lands and peoples."Learned, wide-ranging and important. . . . Pagdens willingness to examine the three empires in tandem is as rewarding as it is innovative."-Linda Colley, London Review of Books"An impressive book, erudite and lively. . . .The book succeeds as an exercise in drawing together the interpretive treatises of three empires over three centuries and showing, often subtly but at times explicitly, their similarity."-William D. Phillips, Jr., American Historical Review"This volume . . . provides an excellent commentary on the imperial ideologies of three major European powers during the early modern era. . . . This is a book to which scholars will return time and again. I certainly found it intellectually stimulating."-Chandra R. de Silva, Sixteenth Century JournalAnthony Pagden is Harry C. "On every continent, in every nation, God is at work in and through the lives of believers. From the streets of Amsterdam to remote Pacific islands to the jungles of Ecuador and beyond, each international adventure that emerges is a dramatic episode that could be directed only by the hand of God. Engulfed in the darkness of Irian Jaya's Snow Mountains lived the Yali--canniblas who called themselves "lords of the earth." Yet in terror and bondage they served women-hating, child-despising gods, rendering fearful obedience to harsh edicts and even executing their children. Missionary Stan Dale dared to enter the domain of this Stone Age people, embarking on a fateful course that would swiftly bring him into bloody life-or-death conflict with the Yalis' "Kembu spirits and the complex religion they sustained. Only God could have brought about the stunning, unexpected result.
