BOOK EXCERPT:

In this non-linear look back at my life, I explore my awakening to the concept of radical gratitude. I share about how I found that by living life in Dayenu, I open myself to a life filled with an abundance of love, fulfillment, prosperity, joy and above all peace. I describe how I use my attitude of gratitude to manifest amazing outcomes in my life and offer suggestions to help you do the same. I explore some of the ways I have circumvented my success over the years and offer reparative solutions in the event that you find yourself in a similar situation. My candid descriptions of some of my most challenging moments are meant to offer hope to the reader who is in a time of struggle and looking for personally empowering solutions. I found my peace though gratitude, mindful living and an affirmation practice that I describe in detail in the later chapters. The journey here has not always been peaceful or graceful. Many times it was anything but easy. It is my hope that you will learn or reaffirm that radical gratitude and amazing outcomes are not reserved for those who have all the answers or have life all figured out. It is for all of us who are audacious enough to see and create reasons for gratitude in the everyday moments of life.

“It may appear from the cover that this is a nice book about growing a beard because Jesus did but be warned- you will quickly discover that Ed's adventure takes him, and us, deep into the heart of grace, mercy and the endless discovery of just what the way of Jesus looks like - which, of course, has very little to do with having a beard.”—Rob Bell, Jesus Wants To Save Christians“Inspiring, insightful, sometimes infuriating, often funny, a little weird (like its author) and a must read for anyone wanting to become a serious follower of Jesus Christ” —Cal Thomas“Highly, highly recommended” —Brian McLarenEvangelical pastor Ed Dobson had a radical idea...“Live one year as Jesus lived. Eat as Jesus ate. Pray as Jesus prayed. Observe the sabbath as Jesus observed. Attend the Jewish festivals as Jesus attended. Read the Gospels every week." Dobson’s transition from someone who follows Jesus to someone who lives like Jesus takes him into bars, inspires him to pick up hitchhikers, and deepens his understanding of suffering. Living like Jesus is quite different from what we imagine.“It may appear from the cover that this is a nice book about growing a beard because Jesus did but be warned- you will quickly discover that Ed's adventure takes him, and us, deep into the heart of grace, mercy and the endless discovery of just what the way of Jesus looks like - which, of course, has very little to do with having a beard.”—Rob Bell, Jesus Wants To Save Christians

BOOK EXCERPT:

We have all experienced hunger, whether it's a need for spiritual guidance or physical nutrition. Our hunger for God's Word can benefit those needing material sustenance. God's Word calls us to nourish the hungry and poor, just as it nourishes our faith and sustains us in our struggle for justice. Hunger for the Word explores the Lectionary with a focus on anti-hunger advocacy, social activism, and political issues affecting marginalized people. Using insights, images, and stories from pastors, professors, and laity active in anti-hunger campaigns, this ecumenical book offers devotional connections to inequality issues, as well as themes to help in our struggle to understand and eliminate injustice. Hunger for the Word, edited by Larry Hollar of Bread for the World, brings concern for hunger and fairness into our daily religious life. With weekly sermon/homily reflections, Hunger for the Word is an invaluable resource for pastors, liturgical ministers, and those interested in justice-oriented Bible study and spiritual growth. Also includes suggestions for musical worship, and ideas for children's sermons to help spread God's Word of activism, compassion, and integrity throughout the congregation.

BONUS: This edition contains a new afterword and an excerpt from Gwen Cooper's Love Saves the Day. ONCE IN NINE LIVES, SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY HAPPENS. The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen’s veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who’d been abandoned. It was love at first sight. Everyone warned that Homer would always be an “underachiever.” But the kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease, survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen’s life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night. But it was Homer’s unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that transformed Gwen’s life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized that Homer had taught her the most valuable lesson of all: Love isn’t something you see with your eyes.

Sweet examines how Jesus laughed, hung out with friends, played with children, enjoyed good times at social gatherings, and poked fun at pious pretensions. Using as its hook the life of Jesus, this book details the ways in which Jesus lived a disciplined life and healthy existence and illustrates the ancient truth: "Being cheerful (is like a medicine that) keeps you healthy. It is slow death to be gloomy all the time".--Proverbs 17:22, Good News Bible.
