BOOK EXCERPT:

NFL linebacker, speaker, podcaster, and humanitarian Sam Acho gives a blueprint for taking off our masks and living lives of genuine authenticity. Most of us hide. We play small and don't live up to our full potential. Sam Acho was one of those people. As an NFL linebacker, for example, he earned his MBA but told no one because he was afraid of what people might think if they found out that he cared about things that weren't "normal" for his profession. After many years of hiding himself, the person he had become had no connection to the real Sam. Only when he lost a friend and a mentor did he realize he was doing it all wrong--just like many us do, when we try to become someone we're not. All the while, we ignore the unique gifts and talents and personality we truly possess. But there is another way of living: Let the world see you. Your quirks, your passions, and your inner desires were not given to you by accident. And the world needs your gifts. In Let the World See You, Sam Acho shares lessons from his own life as well as stories from others to reveal how you can overcome your fears and discover your true selves. Being the real you pays big. No one else has what you have. No one else can share what you share. Let the World See You helps crack the shell of people who are in hiding and reveals the benefits of a lifestyle lived on purpose.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The world knows the story of young Emmett Till. In August 1955, the fourteen-year-old Chicago boy supposedly flirted with a white woman named Carolyn Bryant, who worked behind the counter of a country store, while visiting family in Mississippi. Three days later, his mangled body was recovered in the Tallahatchie River, weighed down by a cotton-gin fan. Till's killers, Bryant's husband and his half-brother, were eventually acquitted on technicalities by an all-white jury despite overwhelming evidence. It seemed another case of Southern justice. Then details of what had happened to Till became public, which they did in part because Emmett's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, insisted that his casket remain open during his funeral. The world saw the horror, and Till's story gripped the country and sparked outrage. Black journalists drove down to Mississippi and risked their lives interviewing townsfolk, encouraging witnesses, spiriting those in danger out of the region, and above all keeping the news cycle turning. It continues to turn. In 2005, fifty years after the murder, the FBI reopened the case. New papers and testimony have come to light, and several participants, including Till's mother, have published autobiographies. Using this new evidence and a broadened historical context, Elliott J. Gorn delves more fully than anyone has into how and why the story of Emmett Till still resonates, and always will. Till's murder marked a turning point, Gorn shows, and yet also reveals how old patterns of thought and behavior endure, and why we must look hard at them.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Envision a cold and calculating future world, where mankind has attained miraculous gains on the one certain, chilling fact of life that has plagued the species since the dawn of time. In this bold new landscape, humans are able to predict the body's natural demise with a specific numerical prediction of the age of death, called a PDA. What's more, life spans have dramatically increased, and humans can fend off the inevitable depending on how they live. That is, all humans except for one: Sophia Nolan, who, since birth, has faced a number that has idled at a grim twenty-seven. Twenty-Seven, Shayne Woodsmith's arresting, dystopian debut novel, lays bare the plight of this one mere mortal and what her all-too-human condition suggests for a species that has been forever fixated on cheating death. As Sophia rapidly approaches the age of twenty-seven, she must reckon with the consuming obsession of the society around her. Fast-paced, thought-provoking, and at times utterly frantic, Twenty-Seven delivers a disarmingly honest portrayal of human frailty and strength through the lens of one tormented outcast. While presciently casting a cold eye on our health-obsessed future, it exposes the darker side of an all-too-sterile world, where the ultimate prestige is longevity. You may never look at the notion of a long and healthy life in the same way again.
