BOOK EXCERPT:

A text that truly embodies its name, CHEMISTRY: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE, 3rd, International Edition connects the chemistry students learn in the classroom (principles) with real-world uses of chemistry (practice). The authors accomplish this by starting each chapter with an application drawn from a chemical field of interest and revisiting that application throughout the chapter. The Case Studies, Practice of Chemistry essays, and Ethics in Chemistry questions reinforce the connection of chemistry topics to areas such as forensics, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and industry.

Teach the course your way with INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY, 6e. Available in multiple formats (standard paperbound edition, loose-leaf edition, digital MindTap Reader edition, and a hybrid edition, which includes OWLv2), this text allows you to tailor the order of chapters to accommodate your particular needs, not only by presenting topics so they never assume prior knowledge, but also by including any necessary preview or review information needed to learn that topic. The authors’ question-and-answer presentation, which allows students to actively learn chemistry while studying an assignment, is reflected in three words of advice and encouragement that are repeated throughout the book: Learn It Now! This edition integrates new technological resources, coached problems in a two-column format, and enhanced art and photography, all of which dovetail with the authors’ active learning approach. Even more flexibility is provided in the new MindTap Reader edition, an electronic version of the text that features interactivity, integrated media, additional self-test problems, and clickable key terms and answer buttons for worked examples. BOOK EXCERPT:

Distinguished by its superior allied health focus and integration of technology, Seager and Slabaugh's INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY FOR TODAY, Seventh Edition continues to meet students' needs through diverse applications, examples, boxes, and outstanding technology tools. Prompts throughout the new edition lead students to OWL (web-based learning system) -- two unique online programs that extend the lessons of the text and help students study smarter. In addition to the many resources found in OWL, the book and website contain questions modeled after the Nursing School and Allied Health Entrance Exams. INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY FOR TODAY dispels students' inherent fear of chemistry and instills an appreciation for the role chemistry plays in our daily lives through a rich pedagogical structure and an accessible writing style with lucid explanations. In addition, the book provides greater support in both problem-solving and critical-thinking skills -- the skills necessary for student success. By demonstrating the importance of chemistry concepts to students' future careers and by providing important career information online, the authors not only help students set goals but also help them focus on achieving them. This textbook is identical to the longer book by this author called General, Organic, and Biochemistry with these exceptions: it contains fewer chapters and those chapters are numbered differently than they are in the longer book. OWL does not have a separate course (with the eBook or without eBook) for the shorter book, so links on this page to purchase access will take you to the longer book. BOOK EXCERPT:

Introductory Organic Chemistry provides a descriptive overview of organic chemistry and how modern organic chemistry is practiced. Organic compounds such as alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, cycloalkenes, and alkynes are covered, along with aromatic hydrocarbons, compounds derived from water and hydrogen sulfide, and compounds derived from ammonia. This book also explores organic reaction mechanisms and describes the use of molecular spectroscopy in studying the chemical structure of organic complexes. This text consists of 15 chapters and begins with a discussion on some fundamental ideas about organic chemistry, from the electronic structure of atoms to molecular structure, molecular orbitals, hybridization of atomic orbitals in carbon, chemical equilibrium, enthalpy, and acids and bases. The chapters that follow focus on the compounds of carbon such as alkanes and cycloalkanes; benzene and other aromatic hydrocarbons; amines and other heterocyclic molecules; aldehydes and ketones; carboxylic acids and their derivatives; nucleic acids; amino acids; peptides; and proteins. The use of instrumentation methods in organic chemistry, particularly mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, is also considered. An account of the mechanisms of an organic reaction is presented, paying particular attention to displacement and elimination reactions. This book concludes with a commentary on how most of the amino acids, sugars, heterocyclic molecules, and fatty acids necessary for life processes could have been formed on Earth. This book is intended for nonmajors taking an introductory organic chemistry course of two quarters or one semester in length.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Steve Russo and Mike Silver turn chemistry into a memorable story that engages readers and provides the context they need to understand and remember core concepts. The book builds interesting applications and well-designed illustrations into the narrative to get and hold attention, then builds confidence with integrated active learning activities. Readers make the connections between concepts and the problem-solving techniques they need to master as they read. The new edition strengthens this conceptual approach and presents additional quantitative techniques in key areas. Readers will find enhanced support for quantitative problem-solving and more challenging questions at the end of each chapter, in addition to the wealth of technology-based support on The Chemistry Place(tm), Special Edition and on The Chemistry of Life CD-ROM. For college instructors and students.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Seventh Edition of Zumdahl and DeCoste’s best-selling INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY: A FOUNDATION that combines enhanced problem-solving structure with substantial pedagogy to enable students to become strong independent problem solvers in the introductory course and beyond. Capturing student interest through early coverage of chemical reactions, accessible explanations and visualizations, and an emphasis on everyday applications, the authors explain chemical concepts by starting with the basics, using symbols or diagrams, and conclude by encouraging students to test their own understanding of the solution. This step-by-step approach has already helped hundreds of thousands of students master chemical concepts and develop problem-solving skills. The book is known for its focus on conceptual learning and for the way it motivates students by connecting chemical principles to real-life experiences in chapter-opening discussions and Chemistry in Focus boxes. The Seventh Edition now adds a questioning pedagogy to in-text examples to help students learn what questions they should be asking themselves while solving problems, offers a revamped art program to better serve visual learners, and includes a significant number of revised end-of-chapter questions.
