BOOK EXCERPT:

The Dhammapada is Buddhism s most beloved compendium of the Buddha s sayings. It is memorized by thousands of monks, nuns, and laypeople, and it is chanted daily by millions of pious Buddhists. The Path of Wisdom presents this distillation of the Buddha s wisdom in a fresh translation together with an explanation of the Buddhist context in dialogue with wisdom from the Bible and the Christian monastic and spiritual traditions. In continuity with the long tradition of seeking wisdom through the exchange of insights and experience, this work explores the possibilities that arise when Christianity engages the profound teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. Above all, what this text uncovers is that both wisdom traditions speak piercingly relevant words to us today, and that placing them together in conversation yields surprising insights.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Dhammapada, the Pali version of one of the most popular texts of the Buddhist canon, ranks among the classics of the world's great religious literature. Like all religious texts in Pali, the Dhammapada belongs to the Therev√Ęda school of the Buddhist tradition, adherents of which are now found primarily in Kampuchea, Laos, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Dhammapada, or 'sayings of the dhamma', is taken to be a collection of the utterances of the Buddha himself. Taken together, the verses form a key body of teaching within Buddhism, a guiding voice along the struggle-laden path towards true enlightenment, or Nirvana. However, the appeal of these epithets of wisdom extends beyond its religious heritage to a general and universal spirituality. This edition provides an introduction and notes which examine the impact that the text has had within the Buddhist heritage through the centuries. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Dhammapada, an anthology of 423 verses, has long been recognised as one of the masterpieces of early Buddhist literature. From ancient times to the present, the Dhammapada has been regarded as the most succinct expression of the Buddha's teaching found in the Theravada Pali Canon of scriptures known as the Khuddaka Nikaya ("Minor Collection") of the Sutta Pitaka. Buddhist tradition has it that shortly after the passing away of the Buddha his disciples met in council at Rajagaha for the purpose of recalling to mind the truths they had received from their beloved Teacher during the forty-five years of his ministry. Their hope was to implant the principles of his message so firmly in memory that they would become a lasting impetus to moral and spiritual conduct, for themselves, their disciples, and for all future disciples who would seek to follow in the footsteps of the Awakened One. This edition, with verse-by-verse commentary, captures the full flavor of this Buddhist classic.
