BOOK EXCERPT:

In a book that pairs science with mental illness, and heart with adventure, Erin E. Moulton delivers a moving story about family, friendship and the lengths we go for the people we love. Lucy Peevy has a dream--to get out of the trailer park she lives in and become a famous scientist. And she's already figured out how to do that: Build a robot that will win a cash prize at the BotBlock competition and save it for college. But when you've got a mama who doesn't always take her meds, it's not easy to achieve those goals. Especially when Lucy's mama takes her, her baby sister Izzy, and their neighbor Cam away in her convertible, bound for parts unknown. But Lucy, Izzy and Cam are good at sticking together, and even better at solving problems. But not all problems have the best solutions, and Lucy and Izzy must face the one thing they're scared of even more than Mama's moods: living without her at all. Perfect for fans of Sharon Creech's Walk Two Moons, Jerry Spinelli's Maniac Magee and Katherine Paterson's The Great Gilly Hopkins. Praise for CHASING THE MILKY WAY "Chasing the Milky Way takes readers along for the highest of highs and lowest of lows. A much-needed addition."--School Library Journal "A poignant story filled with chaos, deep affection and hope."--Kirkus Reviews "An empathetic portrayal of mental illness full of sensitivity and, ultimately, hope."--Booklist "Moulton...writes freely about children forced to assume adult responsibilities while remaining in touch with their idealism, and the possibility of everyday magic."--Publishers Weekly

BOOK EXCERPT:

A charming novel about sisterhood, self-identity, and friendship from the author of Flutter Indie Lee Chickory knows she's not as cool as her older sister Bebe. Bebe has more friends, for one. And no one tells Bebe she's a fish freak, for two. So when Indie accidentally brings her pet lobster to school, makes a scene, loses him in the ocean and embarrasses Bebe worse than usual, she makes a wish on a star to become a better Chickory. She tries to do this by joining the stage crew of the community's theater production, The Sound of Music. (Bebe has a starring role.) But Bebe is worried that Indie will embarrass her again, so she gives her a makeover and tells her who she should be friends with. That means Owen is out. But he's fun and smart, so Indie keeps her friendship with him a secret. At night, Indie and Owen rebuild a tree house into a ship in the sky to catch Indie's pet lobster. But during the day, Indie has to hide her friendship with Owen. When things come to a head, Indie realizes that being true to yourself is more important than being cool. But what's even more surprising is that Bebe realizes it, too. Praise for TRACING STARS * “This improbable plot and spunky protagonist are appealing bait for a heartfelt, memorable story.”--Kirkus Reviews, starred review * “This timeless story perfectly captures the growth that summer affords kids when, after endless days and nights, they emerge truer versions of themselves.”--Booklist, starred review “Moulton’s sensitivity to her characters’ emotions extends this quiet tale’s mood and setting. BOOK EXCERPT:

Observations of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation have provided a standard cosmological model, ACDM, in which the universal energy budget is dominated by dark energy and dark matter. Starting from these initial conditions at a red-shift of z ~ 1100, simulations of structure formation predict that most of the matter at the present is contained in galaxies and their dark matter halos. While the spatial distribution of the observed galaxies has been well matched to the cosmic web distribution of simulated dark matter halos on large scales, their internal structure is yet to be measured. In ACDM, dark matter halos are triaxial, and contain a wealth of smaller subhalos devoid of stars. These properties crucially distinguish the standard cosmology from rival theories, so measuring the internal structure of a dark matter halo is of utmost importance. Tidal streams discovered in the Milky Way provide an excellent insight to our own dark matter halo, as they are extremely sensitive to any gravitational perturbations, and their proximity allows for diverse and abundant observational data.

Covering everything from conceptualization and planning to post-processing, this book features innovative cookbook-style "recipes" for each composite nightscape and time-lapse project. Beginning with a review of the key fundamentals of astronomy and photography, author Mike Shaw covers the latest methods for planning your night shooting sessions and how to set up your gear to get the best constituent images. BOOK EXCERPT:

“Poignant and gripping . . . a heartfelt portrayal of a family’s shameful secrets and the power of unconditional love.” –Tracy Price-Thompson, author of A Woman’s Worth People don’t usually name tornadoes, but that year, Daddy insisted. “Any twister that beautiful and that dangerous can only be female. Reminds me of a woman I used to know named Sophea.” He laughed. “Sophea, Sophea.” Dahlia’s life should be perfect. She’s a successful businesswoman with a wonderful husband and a beautiful daughter. But Dahlia senses that something isn’t quite right. More and more often, she has the feeling of being lost in her own body, completely mystified by the simplest things, like traffic lights and car horns. These spells strike at anytime, anywhere. And though aware that she’s off balance, Dahlia has no idea what could be the cause. As Dahlia’s grasp on reality loosens, the signs lead to a traumatic event from her childhood that has made its way into her adult life. There is someone else lurking in the back of Dahlia’s mind–and she wants out. Now she must revisit the painful past, and the memories of a mother who had her own mental demons. The only problem is: Dahlia might have to lose herself entirely if she wants to discover the secrets of that long-ago day when Sophea came to town. From the Trade Paperback edition.
